TUKWILA, Wash. — A water main break in Tukwila caused a road to buckle under pressure.
The main broke at about 2 a.m. Friday at 52nd Avenue South near Interurban Avenue.
The force of the water caused the asphalt to buckle, lifting three-inch-thick slabs.
The water ran downhill and caused some minor flooding in the street.
Firefighters arrived quickly and turned the water off. But when the water was cut off, it created back pressure in the water line and that set off at least eight sprinkler alarms in buildings nearby.
The emergency manager from Tukwila said only the alarms were triggered and no sprinklers actually went off.
Meanwhile, the damaged road is closed and workers will be out later Friday morning to take out the busted asphalt, repair the water main, and get new road surface in.
KIRO 7 was told that because of the "loop" water system in Tukwila, if there are people without water, it's a small number.
