March Madness spread to women’s basketball on Sunday, as the NCAA Selection Committee filled out the bracket. The overall No. 1 team was no surprise.
Unbeaten South Carolina was named the tournament’s top seed. The Gamecocks (32-0) will play in the Greenville 1 Regional against Norfolk State (26-6).
Indiana University (27-3) was chosen as the No. 1 seed in the Greenville 2 Regional. It was the first time in the program’s history that the Hoosiers were named a top regional seed in the women’s tournament.
In the Seattle 3 Regional, Virginia Tech (27-4) was named the top seed. The Hokies will face Chattanooga (20-12) in the first round.
Stanford (28-5) was named the Seattle 4 Regional’s top seed.
Selection Sunday is when the brackets are completed, with 32 filled by the teams that won their conference tournaments. The other 36 teams qualified for “at-large” berths and were chosen by the NCAA Selection Committee.
Games for the women’s First Four will be played on Wednesday and Thursday. They will be followed by first-round games Friday and Saturday.
Second-round games will be played March 19-20, with the Sweet 16 held March 24-25.
The Elite Eight games will be played March 26-27.
The Final Four games, and the women’s title game scheduled for April 2, will be held at American Airlines Center in Dallas.
