Video posted to YouTube shows Shelby MacKenzie taking the trash to the curb outside her home April 14. As she turns and begins to walk back toward her house, a driver slams into her, throwing her several feet and sending her headfirst into the sidewalk.

The driver who hit her fell asleep at the wheel, WOAI reported.

In a GoFundMe raising money for MacKenzie, her family said she suffered two skull fractures, three subdural hemorrhages, an arterial dissection, and the rupture of all the ligaments in her right knee. MacKenzie’s family said on the fundraising site that they are raising money because the driver who hit her had only the minimum insurance and no assets, leaving MacKenzie largely responsible for her own medical bills.

MacKenzie has been released from the hospital, but will need knee surgery in the future, WOAI reported.

In its first 24 hours, the GoFundMe raised more than $12,000 of its $20,000 goal.
