WACO, Texas — A Texas trooper has died after he was shot last week near Mexia, authorities said.
Crews rushed Walker to an area hospital with critical injuries, KWTX reported. By Monday, Walker “no longer [displayed] signs of viable brain activity,” the department said in a Facebook post.
According to KXAN and KWTX, Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Chad Walker died at a Waco hospital Wednesday after he was removed from life support, officials said. He was 38.
Walker’s death came five days after he spotted a vehicle on the side of the road about 8 p.m. Friday near Mexia and pulled over to help, the department said. The driver, 36-year-old DeArthur Pinson Jr., opened fire at Walker, striking him multiple times before fleeing, authorities told KXAN. Authorities, who found Pinson dead the next day at a home near Mexia, believe the suspect shot and killed himself after the incident, the news outlets reported.
“He remains on life support until he can share the gift of life as an organ donor,” the post said.
Two days later, officials announced Walker’s death.
“It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that DPS announces the passing of Trooper Chad Walker. Trooper Walker is a hero who bravely served his community. He died following injuries sustained while on patrol,” the department said in a Facebook post Wednesday.
“A beloved father and husband, Trooper Walker was one of DPS’ finest. His dedication to duty and his selfless sacrifice, in both life and his death, will never be forgotten.”
Walker leaves behind a wife and four children, who range in age from 2 months to 15 years old, according to KWTX.
“Our hearts are with the family and friends of Trooper Walker as they grieve his tragic death in the line of duty,” Gov. Greg Abbott said in a statement late Wednesday. “Trooper Walker’s horrific murder is a solemn reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers face every day to keep our communities safe.”
