DURHAM, N.C. — A North Carolina man is facing murder and intentional child abuse charges in the death of a toddler.
According to WTVD and the Raleigh News & Observer, Durham police arrested Jakeyz Tyshun Giles, 22, of Durham, after a 16-month-old girl he had been caring for died last week.
Police said officers responded to a Mansfield Avenue home about 10:30 a.m. Friday after receiving a report of an unresponsive child, according to the news outlets. Emergency crews rushed the toddler to a nearby hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead, authorities said.
WTVD, citing arrest warrants, reported that the girl had been physically injured, causing “brain death.”
Giles was jailed without bond, according to the TV station.
