NC boy, 12, fatally shoots home intruder who wounded grandmother

GOLDSBORO, N.C. — A 12-year-old North Carolina boy fatally shot an intruder early Saturday after his grandmother was also shot during the home invasion, authorities said.

At around 1 a.m., officers responded to a shooting report in Goldsboro, according to a news release from the Goldsboro Police Department.

Herring was found about a block away from Ellis’ home, suffering from a gunshot wound, WITN reported. He was taken to an area hospital, where he died from his injuries, the television station reported.

Officers found Linda Ellis, 73, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Officers said two masked men forced their way into Ellis’ residence, demanding money, WRAL reported. Police said at least one of the men, later identified as Khalil Herring, 19, was armed and shot Ellis, the television station reported.

Ellis was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and is listed in stable condition, according to the Goldsboro Police Department’s news release.

Police later determined that the juvenile fired at the two men with a firearm in self-defense, causing them to flee the home, according to the news release.

Charges against the 12-year-old who fired the gun are not anticipated by police, according to WRAL. Ellis was identified as the boy’s grandmother, according to WTVD.

The investigation is ongoing, police said.
