Iowa man accused of punching 1-month-old baby in face

OELWEIN, Iowa — An Iowa man is facing charges after authorities said he punched a baby’s face.

According to KGAN and KWWL, Jacob Smith, 26, of Oelwein, attacked the baby on Jan. 31, when the infant was 1 month old. The next day, hospital officials told the Iowa Department of Human Services that a baby had been admitted with a seriously injured skull and fractured ribs, as well as bruises and retinal hemorrhages, KGAN reported.

Investigators said they later interviewed Smith, who admitted he had dropped and punched the child, according to the news outlets. He was arrested last week on a felony charge of willfully causing serious injury, officials said.
