The cameraman, Pierre Zakrzewski, was a veteran war reporter who had been reporting in Ukraine since February, The New York Times reported.

The Ukrainian journalist killed in the attack has been identified as Oleksandra Kuvshynova, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense confirmed Tuesday, The Washington Post reported.

Zakrzewski, 55, was traveling in the same vehicle as Fox News correspondent Benjamin Hall, who was injured in the attack in the town of Horenka. The network has not provided a condition update on Hall, who remains hospitalized in Ukraine, according to the Times.

In a Tuesday memo to staff, Fox News Media CEO Suzanne Scott confirmed Zakrzewski’s death, calling it “a heartbreaking day.”

“Pierre was a war zone photographer who covered nearly every international story for Fox News from Iraq to Afghanistan to Syria during his long tenure with us,” Scott wrote.

“His talents were vast and there wasn’t a role that he didn’t jump in to help with in the field — from photographer to engineer to editor to producer — and he did it all under immense pressure with tremendous skill. He was profoundly committed to telling the story and his bravery, professionalism and work ethic were renowned among journalists at every media outlet,” she added.

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki praised Zakrzewski’s service and journalistic contributions, while offering condolences during Tuesday’s press briefing.

“Our thoughts, our prayers are with his family, with the entire community as well,” Psaki said.

Zakrzewski was an Irish citizen based in London, the Post reported.

Ireland’s prime minister, Micheál Martin, said on Tuesday that he was “deeply disturbed and saddened” by the death of one of the country’s citizens.

“We condemn this indiscriminate and immoral war by Russia on #Ukraine,” he wrote on Twitter.

According to the Times, Zakrzewski assisted last year in Fox News’s efforts to extract its Afghan staff members from Afghanistan after the Taliban took control of the country.

“Pierre was a constant in all of our international coverage,” Jay Wallace, the president of Fox News, wrote in the memo to employees.

“I, like countless others, always felt an extra sense of reassurance when arriving on the scene and seeing him with camera in hand. The legacy of his positive spirit, boundless energy and eye for the story will carry on,” he added.

The deaths of Zakrzewski and Kuvshynova follow the Sunday slaying of 50-year-old American documentary filmmaker Brent Renaud, who was reporting outside Kyiv.
