“It is believed that the person, an adult male, entered the theatre 2-3 days ago. It is not clear how exactly he gained access to the area behind the wall,” the Syracuse Fire Department wrote on its official Facebook page.

Theater employees called 911 after hearing someone banging on the wall and yelling for help, the department stated.

Landmark Theatre spokesperson Mike Intaglietta told WSYR-TV that a man was seen entering the theater on Tuesday, but a later search of the building showed no sign of him.

Investigators believe the 39-year-old man climbed into a crawl space and fell into a void in the wall in the men’s bathroom. Firefighters were able to locate the man with the aid of a fiber optic camera snaked into the wall, the TV station reported.

Firefighters were then able to free the man after carefully cutting through several layers of drywall and structural clay tile, the fire department stated.

The man was transported to an area hospital for evaluation, but his condition remained unknown Saturday evening, WSYR-TV reported.
