The U.S. Park Police said on Saturday that Boyes, 44, was hit while he was riding his bike around Presidio on Tuesday afternoon, according to The Associated Press. Presidio is a historic park located near the Golden Gate Bridge.

Boyes sustained serious injuries and was taken to the hospital where he later died, according to The New York Times. The driver was also taken to the hospital with injuries that were considered to be non-life-threatening. It’s unclear if the driver will be facing any charges or if drugs or alcohol were a factor.

USA Cycling confirmed Boyes’ death on Facebook, stating that he was “an upstanding member of the American track cycling community.”

“His loss will be felt at local, regional, national, and world events for years, as he brought a mixture of competition and friendliness to every race. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones,” USA Cycling said.

Boyes was a 10-time national champion and holds the men’s aged 35-39 world record in the 1,000-meter time trial, USA Cycling said, according to CNN.

The U.S. Park Police will be conducting an investigation into the crash, according to the AP.

“Crash investigations are complex and require an analysis of a large amount of evidence and data,” the U.S. Park Police said in a statement obtained by the AP. “USPP detectives work in partnership with the United States Attorney’s Office as the investigation progresses.”

The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition released a statement on Friday saying that Boyes’ death is the first bicycle death in 2023 in San Francisco.
