According to a FEMA news release, President Joe Biden approved federal funding assistance to people in Allen, Benton, Clinton, Grant, Howard, Johnson, Lake, Monroe, Morgan, Owen, Sullivan and White counties.

The action by the president allows grants for home repairs and temporary housing and low-cost loans to address uninsured property losses, WTHR-TV reported.

The number of tornadoes during the 24-hour period was raised to 23, according to the television station. It was the fifth-highest total in Indiana and the most in the state in one day since Nov. 17, 2013.

The annual statewide average is 22, and that figure was topped in four hours, WTHR reported.

Brian F. Schiller was been named the federal coordinating officer for recovery operations in the affected areas, according to the news release.

Gov. Eric Holcomb wrote on his Facebook page that residents in the state were grateful for the federal assistance.

“I received word President Biden has approved our disaster declaration,” Holcomb wrote. “We’re grateful for this action that will help thousands of Hoosiers and many communities that sustained damages from the historic tornado event that swept across the state with additional assistance as they continue to recover and rebuild their homes and lives.”
