COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — A bear caught on a security camera relaxing on a couch was later euthanized after wildlife officials deemed it a threat to public safety.
The 150-pound male black bear can be seen on video rubbing its nose on a couch in a Colorado Springs home Sunday morning. The homeowner was cooking bacon in the kitchen when the bear ripped through the screen door, according to KCNC-TV. She was able to escape through a window.
A bird feeder outside the home and cat food near the patio screen door could have attracted the bear to the home, officials said.
Wildlife officials said the bear had been tagged specifically, noting that the bear had a history of being too comfortable around people.
The animal returned to look for food, and wildlife officials made the decision to kill the bear.
“It’s always a hard day when we have to euthanize a bear,” District Wildlife Manager Cassidy English said.
“When bears become habituated to people, they can become a threat to public safety,” English said. “This is why it is so important that our community works together to keep wildlife wild.”
