REDMOND, Wash. — Redmond's Boy Scout Troop 575 says getting to a weeklong camping trip this weekend will be challenging because of a thief.
Last Friday, someone stole their trailer full of supplies and gear where it was parked at Timberlake Church.
"We went to get our gear so we could put our backpacks in there to travel more easily and it wasn't there," said Scoutmaster David Guyer.
He estimates the trailer and the supplies were worth about $7,000.
The church parking lot did have surveillance cameras, but the one near where the trailer was parked was pointed up.
"It didn't say Boy Scouts on it, so we didn't know. We have no indication they were targeting the boy scouts that it happened to be our trailer that they took," Guyer said. "It was a random act of unkindness."
Guyer said that the theft has become a learning lesson for the troop.
"One of the things we teach is trustworthiness and honesty and how to be a good citizen, and when you have something like this it counters to those lessons. At the same time, we can turn that around and actually make that kind of show that these things do happen but you can persevere, you can’t overcome that," said Guyer.
"Not everybody is perfect but the community will help if something happens," said Galen Guyer, a scout in Troop 575.
Despite the setback, the troop plans to rent a U-Haul to get its gear to a campsite in Oregon.
The troop said Timberlake Church has also offered to chip in for a new trailer, along with other community members willing to donate.
"Despite a lot of badness that occurs, there's a lot of goodness that occurs in the country today as well," said David Guyer.
