TACOMA, Wash. — The Tacoma Police Department is investigating the city’s 10th homicide of the year and the fifth where the victim was a minor.

At about 1:15 p.m. Wednesday, officers were called to a report of multiple shots fired near the Lakeside Landing Apartments in the 1400 block of South Mildred Street.

When officers arrived, they found an unresponsive 16-year-old boy on the ground. He was later declared dead at the scene by Tacoma Fire Department personnel.

As a precaution, Tacoma Community College was placed on lockdown but it was lifted at around 3 p.m. Visitors were asked not to come to the campus.

“It’s not going to be easy, but it will take all of us. Whether you have kids or don’t have kids, this is a community issue and everyone needs to sit up, pay attention and get involved,” said Wendy Haddow, TPD public information officer.

The shooting is being investigated as a homicide. Anyone with information incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS(8477).
