A man has been convicted for the second time in the 2002 killing of an 18-year-old Marysville woman.
John Alan Whitaker was found guilty Thursday of aggravated murder and conspiracy to commit murder in the death of Rachel Burkheimer, who was kidnapped and fatally shot by several young men.
Whitaker had been serving a life sentence for the crime until 2013, when a state appeals court overturned his 2004 conviction and granted him a new trial.
The jury's guilty verdict Thursday doesn't yet mark the end of the case.
A judge still needs to decide on the defense's motion seeking a mistrial. Whitaker's attorneys argue that jurors shouldn't have heard that their client invoked his right to remain silent when questioned by police in 2002.
