Dieringer School District residents to vote on $9.5 million bond

As Washington State struggles to find a way to fund public schools, Dieringer School District residents in Lake Tapps will vote on a $9.5 million bond by Feb. 14.

The school district website says the bond will address a growing school district, adding additional student capacity and facility supports.

Three classrooms would be added to Lake Tapps Elementary.

Building upgrades would be done to Dieringer Heights Elementary and North Tapps middle schools. Also included in the upgrades would be new security entrances.

Because the district doesn’t have high schools and most students attend either Bonney Lake or Sumner High Schools in the Sumner School District, $6.2 million would go toward remodeling those schools.

The Courier-Herald reports that the bond comes with a property tax rate increase that equates to about $9.58 per month for homes costing $500,000.  A .pdf document on the school’s website states, “Failure to pass the bond issue will result in the Dieringer School District being disbanded and made part of one or more of the area’s surrounding districts.”

Washington state lawmakers are still trying to find a fix to fund state schools. Both Democrats and Republicans have criticized each other’s plans that were released recently.
