REDMOND, Wash. — Michele McNeill is still trying to make sense of the tragedy that unfolded last night in the house behind hers.
"I'm just shocked," said McNeill. "Because you see this on the news. And it's usually someone you don't know. But when it's your child and really good close friend that they've known for years, it's really hard."
The father of her young son's best friend was murdered, say King County Sheriff's deputies, by his oldest son.
McNeill was asked if they are good neighbors.
"They're great neighbors," said McNeill. "They're great neighbors."
Deputies said they received a 911 call that the two men were arguing inside their house on the private Northeast 75th Street in Redmond.
Then, a second 911 call that shots had been fired.
An older woman and 11-year-old boy fled. Inside the house were the 22-year-old suspect, his 18-year-old sister and the father. By then the father was dead.
"We don't know what the argument was about," said King County Sheriff's Sgt. DB Gates. "Detectives are working to talk to some family members. There were two family members in the house when the argument started."
Neighbors identified the father as 51-year-old Zdenek Karasek. His Linked In profile says he owned a small marketing business that he ran out of his home.
Now his neighbors are left to wonder how things turned so tragic.
"Never heard any problems in the house," said McNeill. "And I still don't know what happened."
The suspect is in the King County Jail.
He is expected to make a first court appearance Monday afternoon.
