Two people were airlifted to Harborview Medical Center Monday after their small plane crashed into trees in the Discovery Bay golf course near Port Townsend.
A man and woman were flown from the scene with serious injuries after crews from East Jefferson Fire and Rescue used the jaws of life to pry them from the wreckage.
Eyewitnesses told rescuers the plane appeared to be having some sort of mechanical problem as it flew low over the trees.
“The initial report what we heard over the radio was that the reporting party head the plan stutter and then it appeared to lose power,” said East Jefferson Fire and Rescue public information officer Bill Beezley.
The plane slammed into a patch of woods near the 17th fairway. The pilot may have been looking for a place to make an emergency landing the aircraft went down.
“Based on the lineup and where the plane landed it looked like it was running up the 17th fairway and maybe kind of overshot it,” said Beezley.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
