Police say woman reached toward concealed gun when approached by officer

BURIEN, Wash. — Burien police said a woman believed to have a warrant for her arrest reached toward a concealed weapon when approached by an officer Monday, and she had her child with her.

Police said an officer was dispatched to look for the woman who was believed to have a DUI warrant for her arrest as part of the department’s zero tolerance for DUI offenders.

The officer was told the woman, who does not have a concealed weapon permit, often carries a gun.

Police said when the officer found the woman in the 2600 block of South 128th Street, she tried to hide behind a tree.  When she was ordered come out, she began walking toward the officer while reaching behind her back.

The officer then pulled his weapon and ordered her to show her hands. The woman complied and was placed into custody.

A loaded handgun was found in the small of her back.  The woman said she carried the gun for protection but does not have a permit and the gun was confiscated.

Because the woman also had her child with her, Child Protective Services was notified.

Police said her son was walking away from his mother and was not in the line of fire when the officer pulled his weapon.
