Police report released in accidental fatal shooting of Marysville officer's daughter

STANWOOD, Wash. — A police report has been released detailing the accidental shooting that killed a Marysville police officer’s 7-year-old daughter last month.

A Stanwood police incident report said an officer responded at the 100 block of state Route 532 to find off-duty Marysville officer Derek Carlile doing CPR on his daughter, who was lying on the floor of a van, shot.

Carlile told the officer that he believed his son had shot the girl with his .22-caliber revolver that was kept in an ankle holster that he usually keeps on his ankle.

Carlile said he believed he must have left the gun in a cubby holder under the dash of the vehicle and his son had found it while he and his wife were out of the vehicle, the report said.

The off-duty officer said they had stopped by the Stanwood art studio where his wife works, got out of the van and left the four children inside.  He said they were in clear view of the van while they were talking to the studio owner outside.

While outside, they heard a “pop,” and one of his daughters exited the van saying what he believed were the words "gun" and the name of his son.

Carlile told police he immediately ran to the van and noticed his 7-year-old daughter, who had been sitting in the middle of the bench seat, slumped to the side with a wide stare in her eyes. He noticed blood and realized she had been shot. He removed her from the seat and started CPR while his wife called 911, the report said.

The report said Carlile told the officer that after the shooting, he found the gun lying on the floor between the two front seats with the barrel pointed to the rear of the van.

Carlile reiterated that the gun was kept in the holster that had been concealed in the front cubby, out of eyesight due to his wife's purse being placed in front of it.

Prosecutors have not decided if charges will be filed in the shooting.
