Police arrest 6 people after large group disturbance in Capitol Hill

SEATTLE — Six people were arrested early Sunday morning after a large group disturbance in the Capitol Hill neighborhood, according to the Seattle Police Department.

Police said after midnight, a group began to assemble on the corner of 12th Avenue and Madison Street.

The group grew to about 40 people and then 15 minutes later, the group broke up. Shortly after, the group reassembled on 13th Avenue and started marching westbound on East Pine Street towards 12th Avenue.

Police said around 12:40 a.m., there were reports of people lighting off fireworks.

The crowd traveled on Broadway and police said officers saw people in the group knocking over road signs and dragging garbage cans into the street.

Police attempted to detain a woman who was in the process of dragging a garbage can into the street, but she eluded officers and ran back into the crowd.

The group continued down on East Pike Street and was stopped by a line of officers on 10th Avenue. They began to dance and bang on drums.

Police said several people yelled at the officers and others began to place bandanas over their faces. Also, officers overheard some of the people discussed about breaking windows.

As the group moved to East Union Street, police reported seeing more people put bandanas over their faces.

Seattle police said the group might be affiliated with various anarchist groups.

After 1 a.m., a police commander ordered the group to get off the street and back onto the sidewalk. The group complied.

According to police, a 25-year-old man walking on the sidewalk, intentionally stepped off and went back onto the street and walked towards the police commander.

Police said the man clicked his heels and stood in front of the commander.

The police commander informed the man he was under arrest and directed officers to arrest him.

After the man was taken into custody, the group became agitated and verbally abusive, according to police.

Police saw an unknown man jumping up and down on a parked car and ordered him to stop and get down. When the man refused, officers used pepper spray.

Several people in the group came forward and a 24-year-old man kicked the commander in the knee. Officers used pepper spray on him and arrested him for assault, police said.

As officers helped the commander, a 30-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman grabbed onto the man being arrested and pulled him back into the group.

Police said the 31-year-old woman was arrested earlier in the week for trespassing and is well-known in the anarchist community.

Officers arrested the man and woman for hindering with law enforcement.

According to police, a 29-year-old woman was arrested for pedestrian interference and obstructing and a 22-year-old woman was arrested for pedestrian interference.

All six people were taken to the East Precinct, where they were treated for the effects of pepper spray and were booked into the King County Jail for the various charges.
