TACOMA, Wash. — A person of interest in an arson fire at a Tacoma pet store came forward and was interviewed by police on Monday.
Police said he was not considered a suspect.
The man was seen in surveillance video during a fire at PetSmart in Tacoma on February 28. Police said he contacted them after seeing himself in a story about the fire that aired on KIRO 7 on Wednesday.
Police wanted to talk to the man because they said he acted suspiciously, walking in and out of the store, telling people he was a firefighter, but then leaving when fire crews arrived.
Investigators said on Monday that the man was in fact an off-duty firefighter and they consider him a witness in the case and no longer a person of interest.
The fire, which was set in a display at the rear of the store, caused tens of thousands of dollars in damage. No arrests have been made in the case.
