SEATTLE — The first day of boating season started Saturday morning, and thousands are expected to be on Lake Washington.

Many events are going to be held throughout the day at the Montlake Cut for boaters and spectators.

At least 10,000 people will crowd for the 10:20 a.m. start of the 26th Windermere Cup. More than 700 rowers will be competing in the event hosted by the University of Washington. This year, Oregon State University, the University of Virginia and the Argentina National team will be competing along with the University of Washington. Around 40,000 people were in attendance as Huskies won in 2011.

Then around noon Saturday, the parade of boats will start.

Drivers are advised to take alternate routes because the Montlake Bridge will be closed from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Seattle police officers are going to be out in full force to make sure people are safe.

Police want to make sure boaters and passengers keep an eye on their drinking, pay attention to boating rules, wear a life jacket and to not dive into dangerous places.

KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter Bob Robuck spoke with Jim Hall, a boater in attendance, and he said he and his passengers plan to celebrate safely for Saturday’s events.

“Any drinking that happens is after you are at anchor,” said Hall. “We treat a boat just like a car as far as drinking and driving.”

Thousands turned out during last year’s events and Saturday’s activities are expected to be better.
