SEATTLE — Seattle's Occidental Park is being transformed. Today colorful tables and chairs were added to the open space. The tables and chairs are part of a plan to revitalize the Pioneer Square Park.
The plan is to make the park a welcome space for everyone.
"It's just been an open area before, now there's something to actually do, " said Matthew Cook who works nearby.
Food trucks will visit each day, entertainment is planned for each summer night. The bright blue tables and chartreuse chairs will stay put 24 hours a day. Security guards will keep an eye on them. There will be an area for children, art classes, fitness classes.
The park is known as a hangout out for homeless in Seattle, the plan is not to push anyone out but instead to be inclusive.
"I think it's a great idea, utilizing the space because it is all inclusive, " said tourist Gary Barsalou, visiting from Victoria B.C.
The classes kick off next Monday. The food trucks and evening entertainment are already in full swing.
"Everyone should be able to enjoy these spaces," said James Sido of the Downtown Seattle Association, "I'm excited for the potential of these spaces to be realized."
