Northgate house fire blamed on box fan

SEATTLE — Eight people in Northgate are without a home after an electrical fire burned it up, along with everything inside.

The fire started about 6 p.m. Tuesday at Meridian Avenue and North 113th Street.

Firefighters cut holes in the roof to battle the intense flames.

Minutes earlier, one of eight roommates who lived there was in his room when the fire started.

“I was just smelling something burning, and I heard my roommate yelling, so we went upstairs and one of the rooms had smoke coming out of it,” said William Bendgen.

Six roommates were home at the time of the fire, but made it out safely.

Firefighters said an overheated fan was to blame for the fire.

The damage estimate is $200,000 for the home and another $75,000 for everything inside.
