EVERETT, Wash. — A house near Everett erupted in flames early Monday.

Squatters were able to escape the fire at the home in the 200 block of 107th Street Southeast.

Firefighters said two transients had been living in the home that caught fire about 3 a.m. They both got out safely.

Crews said the fire was difficult to fight because the home was surrounded by huge blackberry bushes that were nearly as tall as the home. Firefighters had to cut through the brush to get to the home.

The fire has been put out, but the home is believed to be total loss.

Officials said the fire started when a candle was knocked over.
