Bellingham PD say man who robbed bank wanted to be arrested

BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Bellingham police say a man who robbed a bank never tried to leave the building and simply waited for officers to arrive.

Officers were called to the bank in the 1500 block of Cornwall Avenue at 11:24 a.m. Wednesday. Officers said they were initially told that a man, later identified as Charles M. Gallaher, walked into the bank armed with a golf club and passed a note to a teller indicating he was robbing the bank.

But investigators learned that Gallaher had not been armed with anything and had quickly indicated he was there to get arrested.

Police say after Gallaher was given money, he waited for officers to arrive and never tried to leave the bank.

When police arrived, he was taken into custody peacefully.  He was then interviewed and booked into the Whatcom County Jail for investigation of robbery.

Gallaher, who is 42, has a Bellingham address.
