North Seattle dump site to close Monday

SEATTLE — The dump site will close Monday evening and will stay closed for two years as a new station is built.

Customers line up seven days a week to get into the Seattle Solid Waste North Transfer Station on North 34th Street.

Weighed and paid, they’re in.

“We're moving someone out of their apartment that's full of black mold," said customer Dan Bilow of Auburn.

Bilow got here just in time.

Seattle Public Utilities will close the North Transfer Station Monday evening at 5:30.

The old site will be torn down, and new facilities will go in its place.

Construction on a modern, more efficient facility is expected to take two years.

“Wow. That's going to be inconvenient," said customer Susie Johnson.

The city suggests customers take the 10-mile drive to South Kenyon Street.

The new South Transfer Station is hard to miss.

The city says it’s also not as busy as the North Transfer Station.

"It's a nice place down there," said Bilow of the new facility.

Nice, but some North Seattle customers are concerned.

"I think a lot of people aren't going to take the time if it's going to be half an hour, 45 minutes away," said Johnson.

Capitol Hill resident Erich Smith says the old facility has to go.

"It really doesn't match this area anymore, but (I) will be sorry to lose something so convenient," said Smith.

The construction project is expected to cost 92.4 million.

Seattle Public Utilities expects a new, more modern and efficient North Transfer Station to open sometime in 2016.
