Mercer Island ranked one of 25 cities with most expensive homes

MERCER ISLAND, Wash. — Mercer Island is ranked as one of the top 25 cities in the U.S. with the most expensive homes.

It's number 23 on a national list.

According to the Coldwell Banker Home Listing Report, the average four bedroom, two bath home goes for $1.6 million.

The average home in Washington State sells for $404,638.

At the same time, Zillow says that while it's cheaper to buy than rent a home, many people in Seattle may be struggling to save up for a down payment.

Zillow says that if a person wants to put 20 percent down on a home in Seattle they'd have to come up with about $70,000.

That's about the same amount as what an average Seattleite earns; however, there are state programs that offer help.

"Our first concern is that we don’t have 20 percent down for anything. The down payment has always been an issue,” said homeowner Brian Nozynski.

Nozynski and his wife got a no-interest down payment loan through the Washington State Housing Finance Commission.

To qualify for the loan though, the combined household income has to be $97,000 or less.
