SEATTLE — August 17 has been officially proclaimed "Seattle Geocaching Day" by Seattle Mayor Michael McGinn.
Geocaching, the search for hidden containers using an app or GPS unit, is "powering positive communities and exchanges across political borders," according to McGinn.

The activity started in the Pacific Northwest in 2000. There are 6,000 geocaches hidden in parks, public areas and camouflaged in plain sight within 25 miles of Seattle, according to Eric Schudiske, a Geocaching spokesman.
The third Saturday of August is also celebrated by adventurers around the world as International Geocaching Day.
Geocachers will celebrate on Aug. 17 at a Seattle Geocaching Block Party in Seattle's Fremont neighborhood. More than 3,000 people from more than a dozen countries are expected to attend the event.
