Transportation officials say though a search continues, there are indications a Washington State Department of Transportation bridge maintenance technician’s car breached a cable railing on the lower deck of the bridge while he was leaving work Monday evening.
Out of respect for the employee’s family, they are not sharing his identity until more definite information is known. The employee's wife requested the following sentiment be shared.
"I'd like to thank everyone at DOT for their support and concern during this terrible time. My husband loved his job, loved working with the Hood Canal Bridge crew, and loved his family. My family and I would also like to thank the first-responders and others for all the work they're doing to find him."
Trooper Russ Winger said it's believed the incident may have happened sometime Monday night, possibly around 5 p.m. The incident happened on the lower deck and not where there is regular traffic.
There were no witnesses. Officials continue to search for the vehicle.
"I feel compelled to take this opportunity to stress yet again how important [WSDOT employee] safety is to me and Governor Inslee," Roger Millar, acting secretary of transportation, said in a statement. "We all know [their] jobs involve potential danger. It's heartbreaking when that danger becomes a reality and, in an instant, changes lives forever."
