SEATTLE — Woodland Park Zoo has received the first of two rhinos for a new exhibit that will open next month.

Taj, a 17-month-old male greater one-horned rhino, arrived last Friday after a road trip from San Diego, where he was born. The rhino traveled in a custom-made trailer driven by an expert who specializes in moving rhinos, according to the zoo.

Taj means “crown” or “jewel” in Hindi.

Taj and another male rhino, Glenn, who has yet to arrive from Cumberland, Ohio, will live in the zoo's new Assam Rhino Reserve, which opens May 5.  The rhinos, which were born a day apart at separate locations, will be 18 months old when they make their debut.

The young rhinos, which are still growing, currently weigh 1,500 pounds each, but will weigh between 4,000 and 5,000 pounds once they are fully grown.

The greater one-horned rhino, also known as the Indian rhino, is second in size only to African white rhinos.

In addition to the new rhinos, the exhibit will also showcase Asian brown tortoises and demoiselle cranes.
