Republican Senator Lindsey Graham died Saturday evening following a “brief and sudden illness,” according to a statement from his office.
No other details have been released.
Graham was 71 years old.
“Senator Lindsey Graham, one of the greatest people and Senators I have ever known, is dead! He was always working, and was a true American Patriot. Lindsey will be greatly missed!!! DETAILS AND ARRANGEMENTS TO FOLLOW. So sad,” President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social.
Graham represented South Carolina in the senate from 2003 until his death.
South Carolina’s governor will appoint an interim replacement for Graham’s seat. That person will serve until January 3, 2027. Graham’s seat is up for reelection this year, so the next senator will be elected during the November midterms.
