Traffic backups after semi carrying bananas catches fire, blocks lanes on NB I-5 in Pierce County

A semi-truck fire is causing significant traffic backups on northbound I-5 through Tacoma Friday morning.

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) and Washington State Patrol (WSP) said the fire is out, but two lanes remain blocked near the Puyallup River Bridge.

According to WSP, the trailer was carrying a load of bananas.

The incident was first reported around 6 a.m. near the north end of the Puyallup River Bridge. At that time, WSDOT said traffic was backed up to the I-705 interchange as firefighters worked to extinguish the semi-truck fire.

As of about 7 a.m., the backup stretched from the Puyallup River to eastbound State Route 16.

By 8 a.m., traffic was backed up on NB I-5 to South 56th Street and on EB SR 16 to South 19th Street.

The left lane and HOV lane remained open while crews responded.

Drivers traveling northbound between Tacoma and Fife should expect delays.
