On Tuesday morning, some fundraisers in the fight against cancer got a thrilling opportunity few have ever had before. The top 10 fundraisers for Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research from the 2017 Base 2 Space climb got the chance to climb to the top of the Space Needle’s mast, 605 feet up.
“I would guess there's been fewer than 20 to 30 members of the public who've ever done this in the history of the Space Needle,” Space Needle public relations director Dave Manapat told KIRO 7.
Among the climbers was Jenn Nelson who raised money to honor her mom, who died of cancer three years ago. On her way down, Nelson spread some of her mother’s ashes from the top of the Space Needle.
Last year, the Base 2 Space climb raised more than $860,000 for Fred Hutch. The goal for this year's Sept. 30 climb is more than a million. There’s still plenty of room for anyone to sign up.
“And that's a lot of the reason friends and family contributed so much,” Nelson said. “It was in her honor. Her name's Carol, so people contributed for Carol.”
