Tony Reed's lawyer: 'Glad' the suspected murderer is 'safe'

ARLINGTON, Wash. — One of two men suspected of murdering an Arlington couple could be back in Snohomish County in a matter of days. Tony Reed's lawyer confirmed Tuesday that Reed contacted him and asked him to facilitate his surrender at the U.S./Mexico border on Monday.

Attorney James Kirkham told KIRO 7 he's "glad" Tony Reed "is safe."

Tony and John Reed are suspected of murdering Patrick Shunn and Monique Patenaude of Arlington in April.  The brothers then fled to Mexico. John Reed’s whereabouts are still unknown and Kirkham wouldn’t disclose any further details during his short phone conversation with KIRO 7.

Meanwhile, acting assistant chief of the U.S. Marshals Service in Western Washington, Kayla Celaya, said officers were waiting for Tony Reed when he walked across the border at Tijuana on Monday.

Reed will have an extradition hearing in San Diego Wednesday morning. He’s not expected to fight extradition because of his efforts to arrange his own surrender.

Snohomish County Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Craig Matheson expects Reed to be back in the northwest by the end of the week, but wouldn’t comment on whether Reed struck any kind of deal with prosecutors.

In response to Tony Reed's arrest, Erik Shunn posted on his Facebook page that he's glad one of the men charged with murdering his brother and sister-in-law is behind bars.

The younger Shunn hopes Tony Reed’s capture will “help in finding the bodies of Pat and Monique.”
