LAKEWOOD, Wash. — Five officers were shot dead Thursday during a protest in Dallas against two officer-involved shootings earlier this week.

In 2009 we had our own tragedy in Washington state when four Lakewood officers were shot and killed at the former Forza Coffee Co. coffee shop, located at 11401 Steele Street South.

The Pierce County shooting occurred on Nov. 29 — the Sunday after Thanksgiving.

"Over the next 40 hours, the region was gripped with fear, as the gunman — identified as ex-convict Maurice Clemmons – was at large, still armed and certainly dangerous," the Seattle Times said in a 2011 article.

Pierce County sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer said the four were attacked "without warning" in what appeared to be "an execution," the News Tribune said in a 2009 article.

Two of the officers were shot dead while they sat at a table. A third was fatally wounded after jumping up from the table.

The fourth officer managed to shoot the attacker once before being killed.

Clemmons was at the center of a statewide manhunt for two days before being shot and killed by a police officer in Seattle.
