TACOMA, Wash. — The Soundview Little League team from Tacoma is preparing to play in the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
It marks the first time in history that a team from Tacoma has reached the tournament.
Soundview Little League is representing the Northwest region in the World Series. This marks the sixth consecutive year that a team from Washington state has advanced to the Little League World Series.
Head Coach Kyle Yarbrough, whose son plays on the team, praised the team’s dedication following years of development.
“Obviously, I’m a dad, too. My son’s on the team. So, as a coach, it’s been awesome to see just kind of the three years of work and growth,” Yarbrough said.
He credited the players’ passion for baseball as a key factor in their success, adding, “I think their love of the game has brought them this far.”
Yarbrough noted that the team feels strong support from the local community as they prepare for the tournament.
“You know, these guys definitely feel the support. And hopefully we can go out and play well for them,” Yarbrough said.
Local fans highlighted the unique milestone for the city. Anthony Shipman, whose son has played with some of the players on the Soundview Little League team, noted the rarity of Tacoma’s achievement.
“Yes, we are the 6th in a row. But are the first time for Tacoma. So, it’s a big deal,” Shipman said.
Another local, supporter Galvin Milloy, expressed enthusiasm for the team, saying, “Let’s go Tacoma! Woo Woo! T-town stand up baby! Let’s do it!”
Tacoma resident Kelleigh Eckholm, 71, shared her own passion for baseball and softball, which she started later in life.
“And when I turned 50, running marathons and 10k’s got really hard. So I decided I’d take up softball,” Eckholm said. She praised the youth team’s run to the tournament, adding, “So the little league team has gone all the way. World Series. Maybe they’ll inspire Mariners to get there.”
Soundview Little League is scheduled to play against the Southeast region team from Alabama on Wednesday at noon.
