AUBURN, Wash. — A man who was shot and killed in a chase that closed both directions of State Route 18 in Auburn on early Tuesday has been identified.

The King County Medical Examiner identified the victim as 36-year-old Timothy Robinette. He died after a gunshot wound to the head.

The freeway was closed for nearly eight hours, between the C Street Southwest exit and Auburn Way, after the fatal shooting.

Troopers said a white SUV was stolen in Auburn and was being chased and shot at by someone in an unknown vehicle. The chase headed the wrong way on westbound SR 18 and the white SUV spun out.

The driver of the SUV, believed to be Robinette, then got out of his vehicle, jumped over the freeway median and died from a gunshot wound in the eastbound lanes around 12:15 a.m. Tuesday, according to troopers.

Troopers are still working on getting a description of the other vehicle.
