PUYALLUP, Wash. — Construction crews hit a natural gas line in downtown Puyallup early Tuesday, closing several city blocks.
Central Pierce Fire said the line was ruptured around 2 am.
Officials closed about a block in every direction near the intersection of Pioneer and Meridian. People who live in the area are sheltering in place, though it’s not a heavily populated area.
Puget Sound Energy turned off the gas and power to the area.
At 7 a.m., Puyallup police said, “this is expected to be a lengthy emergency response for the gas leak.”
As of 8:20 a.m., Central Pierce Fire said they expected the closure to last 4 to 6 more hours.
Officers are reminding people to stay out of the area while crews are working.
Puyallup Police tweeted around 3:45 p.m. that people were allowed to return to the area.
