SEATTLE, Wash. — An era came to an emotional end at Lumen Field, as longtime Seattle Reign midfielder Jess Fishlock played her final home game, after 14 years with the club.
Fishlock, the last original member of the Reign, has spent her entire National Women’s Soccer League career in Seattle. Thousands of fans watched as the Reign picked up a crucial win to keep their postseason alive, giving Fishlock at least one more opportunity to take the field before retirement.
“It is just a very special moment and one that I will remember for a long time,” Fishlock said.
Fans at Lumen Field celebrated a player who has become synonymous with the club.
“Every time she’s on the field, you know, you got a chance to win,” Reign fan Matt Whilden said.
Others pointed to Fishlock’s influence beyond what she has accomplished on the field.
“She brings bigger visibility to women’s sports, in general,” one fan said.
Fishlock’s impact has stretched far beyond Seattle. Rhys Dorrian, a fan from Wales, came to the game carrying a Welsh flag he hoped Fishlock would sign.
“I’m Welsh, and it’s really great we’ve got Welsh players in Seattle,” Dorrian said.
Former Reign star Megan Rapinoe was also in attendance to see her longtime teammate play one final game at Lumen Field.
“There is no Seattle Reign without this bright person,” Rapinoe said.
Fishlock acknowledged that leaving the club and its supporters will be bittersweet.
“The only sad thing about my retirement is that I don’t get more time with them,” Fishlock said.
But Fishlock’s career is not finished just yet. With the Reign’s season still alive, Fishlock said she was focused on getting another opportunity to play.
“To play one more game is just my main emotion,” Fishlock said.
After the game, Fishlock addressed the fans who remained inside Lumen Field for her farewell.
“Thank you so much,” Fishlock told them.
