A major change is coming to the landscape of professional sports in the South Sound that has one soccer team on the move.
And fans can thank the Sounders FC and the Tacoma Rainiers for a big part of it.
"It is my pleasure to announce today that here in the great city of Tacoma at Cheney Stadium will now be the new home for the Reign FC," Tacoma Mayor Victoria Woodards said at a news conference.
"We've suffered a bit as a team in that we haven't been on national TV despite our deal with A&E (Network) and that's because of the aesthetics of the (Memorial) Stadium (we were previously playing at)," Bill Predmore, the Reign FC owner and president, said.
That's one of the reasons why the Seattle Reign FC, who are now formally known as the Reign FC, will play their home matches in Cheney Stadium beginning with the 2019 season.
Megan Rapinoe, the captain of the Reign FC, said here's what fans in Tacoma can expect from the team:
"A team that's really committed to the community, to the fans and creating something like nothing else in the whole country. And (our other goal is to) continue to give the big middle finger to Portland,” said Rapinoe with a big smile in front of a packed crowd. “We're extremely excited to be here."
Aaron Artman, president of the Tacoma Rainiers, made a huge announcement about the Sounders second team.
"I'm thrilled to announce Tacoma's USL franchise will no longer be known as S2 and will be known as The Tacoma Defiance,” said Artman.
KIRO 7 also learned that fans will learn more details about the soccer-specific stadium after a feasibility study is completed in the next two weeks.
