SEATTLE — The Seattle Police Department(SPD) says they are investigating a shooting close to where Mayor Wilson was holding an event near the Yesler Terrace Community Center on Tuesday afternoon.
The shooting happened at around 5:30 p.m., while Mayor Wilson was announcing a proposal for investments in Seattle Public Schools with children and adults in attendance.
SPD says a nearby building was damaged but no one was injured.
“Shortly following my announcement of new investments in Seattle’s children and families today, we heard gunfire. No one was injured, but it was a stark reminder of a reality too many people in this city live with every day,” Mayor Wilson said.
“We cannot let this become normal. We must invest in opportunity, and we must continue working to keep people safe. Today’s announcement was about making those necessary investments,” she said.
Witnesses reported seeing the shooting suspects leave in an unidentified vehicle, SPD said.
