SEATTLE — A new study placed Seattle in the top five of a ranking of 1,000 cities based on a variety of factors, including governance, economics, quality of life, and more.
Seattle fared extremely well on the list, claiming the No. 4 spot in the world with an overall score of 92.8, according to Oxford Economics’ 2026 Global Cities Index.
Seattle’s economic ranking spearheaded its favorable spot on the list, claiming a score of 89.8 out of 100, where only New York, Los Angeles, and San Jose bested the city in this regard.
“From established financial capitals to fast-rising megacities, the index benchmarks performance across five categories,” Oxford Economics stated. “Going beyond a simple ranking, the Index provides a data-driven, forward-looking view of cities’ relative strengths, weaknesses and future potential. It helps businesses, governments and investors understand how cities compare, where their opportunities and challenges lie and how their prospects are evolving.”
The quality of life and environment rankings for Seattle held their own up against some of the other largest cities in the world, receiving 22nd place for quality of life and just outside of the top 30 for Seattle’s environment with a ranking of 28.
What seemingly dragged Seattle down was its scores for human capital and governance, where the Emerald City ranked No. 47 and No. 198, respectively.
The three cities that claimed the top spots on the podium included New York in first place, London, England, trailing close behind, and Paris, France, rounding out the top three.
Portland lands at No. 53 on the list but shares Seattle’s low governance ranking
Portland, Oregon, landed at No. 53 on the list, boosted by its strong environmental and economic scores.
Portland was ranked 31st for its environment and 41st for its economics, while its human capital (116) and quality of life (145) scores held the city down.
By far, the worst score for Portland was its governance, which received a ranking of 198.
