BELLINGHAM, Wash. — A school board director for Bellingham Public Schools — who also owns a sex toy shop — is reportedly offering standalone summer sex education classes to children as young as 9 years old on subjects like “sexual anatomy for pleasure.”
Jenn Mason was elected to the board in 2017 and is now a director in position No. 4.
As part of her status as a small business owner -- and unaffiliated with her role as a school board member -- she is offering four three-hour sex ed classes at WinkWink, her Bellingham sex toy shop, as part of a program dubbed, “Uncringe Academy.”
Among the topics are the ethics and realities of sexualized media and pornography, as well as gender and sex identities.
Mason said her goal is to help young people to feel comfortable around cringeworthy topics, so that they can advocate for their own bodies, health and well-being.
There are classes for kids ages 9-12 and an advanced class for students ages 13-17.
Mason does not sell pornography in the shop, and the class will be physically separated from the sex toys in her shop. Students also have the option of taking the class online.
In a statement issued to KIRO 7, the Bellingham School district stressed that “there is no connection between this board member’s store and the school district.”
“Events/classes at the store are not connected to the school district or any of our schools,” Executive Director of Communications Jacqueline Brawley clarified.
