TACOMA, Wash. — Commuters heading north out of Tacoma and Fife on I-5 may have some delays Tuesday morning as the Washington State Department of Transportation turns on ramp meters.

WSDOT has been trying to ease congestion on northbound I-5 coming out of the area and will be turning on the signals starting at 6 a.m., hoping to put some space between vehicles to give drivers some breathing room.

The new meters are on the northbound I-5 onramps at 54th Avenue East, Port of Tacoma Road and East 28th Street.

WSDOT says the stop-and-go signals that control traffic entering the highway reduce collisions by up to 30 percent.

They will be on during peak commute hours, morning and night.

The ramp meters will operate weekdays from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
