Puget Sound travelers will face major disruptions on I-5 and I-405 this weekend

SEATTLE — Travelers in the Puget Sound region face major highway shutdowns Halloween weekend due to two major construction projects on key north-south corridors.

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) announced full closures on northbound Interstate 5 in Seattle and southbound Interstate 405 in Bothell starting Friday, Oct. 30, through Monday, Nov. 2.

On northbound I-5, all lanes will close from I-90 to Northeast 45th Street starting at 11:59 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, until 5 a.m. Monday, Nov. 2. Ramps and adjacent lanes will begin shutting down as early as 9 p.m. Friday, while express lanes will remain northbound-only throughout the weekend.

The I-5 shutdown will allow crews to remove the Revive I-5 work zone in the two right northbound lanes of the Ship Canal Bridge. State officials say the work zone removal requires dry conditions, and if weather does not cooperate, lane reductions will remain until another suitable weekend.

In Bothell, crews will shut down all southbound lanes of I-405 from SR 527 to SR 522 starting at 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, until 4 a.m. Monday, Nov. 2. Adjacent ramps will close during the operation, with marked detours set up for motorists.

The southbound I-405 closure is required to remove a section of the pedestrian bridge at the Canyon Park Park and Ride as part of the I-405/Brickyard to SR 527 Improvement Project. The pedestrian bridge will close at 12:01 a.m. Friday, Oct. 30, and remain closed until a replacement bridge opens in 2028.

Following the Halloween weekend project, crews plan to close all northbound lanes of I-405 from SR 522 to SR 527 from Nov. 6-9. That closure will allow workers to remove the remaining portion of the pedestrian bridge over the northbound lanes to make space for expanding I-405 through Bothell.

WSDOT officials advise travelers across the region to expect significant delays, leave early or late, carpool, or switch to transit or bicycles.
