Redmond police asked members of the public to remain inside. The man was seen leaving Wendy's on Redmond Way.
Police said at about 1 p.m. they were still searching for him. He had last been seen near Redmond Way and 160th Ave NE. The Lake Washington School District was notified.
The police department said at about 2:30 p.m. they had been unsuccessful in locating the carjacker.
Residents were told they could go outside but police asked members of the public to remain aware.
Police say the suspect approached three women in three different vehicles in the parking garage of the Red 160 Apartment Building on Cleveland Street.
One of the women had her purse and cellphone stolen at gunpoint.
Officers say the suspect got into a car parked in the garage and took that car, after unsuccessfully trying to carjack the three women. Police later found that car crashed near the Wendy's parking lot and learned it had been stolen from Seattle earlier, on Sept. 17.
