A man is dead after Tacoma Police officers responded to a domestic assault shortly before 3 p.m. Sunday.
According to a statement from the department, by 3:56 p.m., officers reported that shots were fired at the scene.
Police provided very little about what happened next, but they say a call of “shots fired” came out just before 4 o’clock. Officer Shelbie Boyd says one man was injured
“At that point officers rendered aid to an adult male suspect. Tacoma Fire Department arrived shortly thereafter and pronounced the male deceased at the scene,” Boyd said.
Boyd says no officers were harmed. Only one officer opened fire and has been placed on leave, which is standard procedure.
There is no additional information Sunday evening about the domestic call that led up to the shooting.
The Office of Independent Investigation (OII) will be reviewing the use of deadly force in this case.
The state legislature created the OII in 2021 to allow the state to run independent reviews of police shootings. Boyd says this is the first time it’s been used in Tacoma.
