Officials with the Clallam County Sheriff's Office said no officers were injured by gunfire. A traffic stop was attempted and Sweet did not yield to officers, speeding off instead.

After fleeing the traffic stop, Sweet was involved in a collision at U.S. 101 and Monroe Street. Police said Sweet then pulled out a gun and opened fire on an officer.

The officer, identified as Whitney Fairbanks, returned fire.

Sweet is expected to survive. Listen to Clallam County Sheriff Bill Benedict describe James Sweet, courtesy of KONP News Radio, embedded below.

U.S. 101 near Baker Street was fully blocked because of police activity.

At noon, one lane in the westbound and eastbound direction at Monroe Street was open to traffic. Officials strongly advised avoiding the area as police continued to investigate.
